Meet Our Games: All Outta Bubblegum

So, you’ve learned how we can help your team grow and develop a culture of cooperation and success, but you’d like to learn a little bit about some of the primary tools we use to do that? Then it sounds like you’re ready to Meet Our Games!

Let’s start off with a bit of an obvious thing: boring is not what we’re about here at TourGuide Games! We want our interactive storytelling experiences to be exciting, entertaining, and memorable for your team. We want you to walk away laughing, and to have shared moments to build relationships on.

All Outta Bubblegum (by Jeffrey Grant & Michael Sullivan) delivers on that in spades. Your team will get to play through an action-adventure story together where you’ll de-stress through fun and laughter. On top of that, you’ll be practicing creative problem solving and communication skills as you weave together a narrative that could fit right in with heist movies, 80’s action flicks, or campy pulp adventures.

The game’s title comes from the John Carpenter cult classic, “They Live”

Our TourGuides come to each All Outta Bubblegum session prepared with an adventure hook and maybe a few curve balls to throw at your team along the way:

  • You’re at a museum to heist a priceless exhibit.
  • There’s one seat left on the last flight home.
  • It’s Friday night and you have to get to the football stadium before halftime.
  • It’s Christmas Eve and you have to grab this year’s hot toy.

You can see that each hook is completely open ended. We want each member of your team to approach the hook in their own way. How do they get across town to the stadium? What happens if they roll poorly on slipping through the much faster pre-check lane? Who are they going to charm at the Museum Gala? When are they going to decide to stop being polite and get that toy any way they can?

But what makes All Outta Bubblegum more than an exercise in improv action? Two things: dice and bubblegum.

In our collaborative storytelling sessions of All Outta Bubblegum, each participant is presented with a choice whenever they want to take an action. Do they want that action to be mundane, or do they want it to be kickass? A mundane action would be something like opening a door in the normal way, driving like a regular person, or engaging in casual small talk. If they choose a kickass action, however, they’re going to be diving through that door, driving like a maniac, or using every conversational trick they know to con whomever they’re talking to.

This is where the dice and bubblegum come into the picture. Everyone starts the session with a set amount of bubblegum and every action requires a dice roll measured against the sticks of bubblegum you have left. A mundane action needs to be less than or equal to the amount of bubblegum you have while a kickass roll needs to exceed it. You can spend bubblegum to automatically succeed at a kickass roll, and you can lose bubblegum for a failed roll.

All of this leads to increasingly wild, often wacky, and frequently hilariously mounting action as your team members will find themselves less able to succeed at mundane actions and more likely to pull off kickass stunts until the whole game feels like an over-the-top action sequence.
